A DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
Meet the Migsam Safaris team on arrival and transfer privately to the Nairobi hotel. The day is reserved for rest and a personal safari briefing. Depending on arrival time, an optional Nairobi activity can be arranged, but the programme does not depend on it. Guests flying with camera equipment receive a reminder about light-aircraft baggage limits before the northern journey begins.
Travel by road or scheduled flight to Samburu, depending on the selected category. The landscape becomes drier and more rugged as the journey moves north of Mount Kenya. After lunch, explore the reserve beside the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river draws elephants and other animals during dry periods, while doum palms and rocky ridges give the area a character quite different from southern Kenya. The guide begins searching for the specialised northern species that define this part of the itinerary.
Use the cooler morning for an extended game drive along the river and through surrounding scrub. The main targets include Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich, although leopards, lions, elephants and African wild dogs may also be encountered. Return to camp for lunch and rest before another drive later in the day. A Samburu-hosted cultural visit may be included when it is arranged respectfully and provides a direct benefit to the participating community.
Leave Samburu after breakfast and travel toward the greener foothills around Mount Kenya. Arrive at Ol Pejeta for lunch, then begin an afternoon game drive across the conservancy. This is an important rhino area and one of the most reliable places in Kenya to observe both black and white rhinos. The guide also looks for lions, elephants, buffalo and plains wildlife. A night drive can be added after dinner, offering the possibility of seeing nocturnal animals that are rarely active during normal park hours.
Spend the day combining wildlife viewing with a closer look at conservation work. Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and learn why the rescued chimpanzees require long-term care. A northern white rhino experience, lion tracking session, rhino monitoring activity or conservation talk can be reserved in advance, subject to availability and the chosen category. These activities are handled as genuine educational encounters, with sufficient time left for a full game drive across the wider conservancy.
Drive west into the Great Rift Valley and descend toward Lake Nakuru National Park. After lunch, explore the lakeshore, woodland and open areas. The park is compact enough to provide a productive afternoon, with opportunities for rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffalo, lions and abundant birdlife. Flamingo numbers vary with water level and food conditions, so they are treated as a possibility rather than a promise. Return to the lodge before the park closes.
Leave the Rift Valley after breakfast and continue to the Maasai Mara. Arrive for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive. The guide uses this first outing to assess wildlife locations and plan the full following day. The Mara adds open plains and a strong predator population to the rare-species and conservation experiences already enjoyed in northern Kenya.
Depart early for a full day of flexible wildlife viewing. Search riverine woodland and open grasslands for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and large herbivore herds. During July to October, the guide follows current migration information while avoiding unnecessary vehicle congestion. Outside migration season, resident predators and plains game remain the focus. Optional ballooning can be arranged, or guests staying in a conservancy may choose a walk or night drive.
After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight to Wilson Airport. The flight saves most of a day that would otherwise be spent on the road. On arrival, meet the transfer driver and continue to the international airport or a Nairobi hotel. A farewell lunch or day room can be arranged when the international flight departs in the evening.
