A DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
Your guide meets you at the Nairobi hotel or airport for a private briefing before the drive south. The city gradually gives way to farming country and the dry plains near the Tanzania border. After lunch and check-in, the first game drive explores Amboseli’s open grassland and permanent wetlands. Elephants often move between the marshes in family groups, while giraffes, zebras, buffalo and wildebeest feed on the surrounding plains. On a clear afternoon, Mount Kilimanjaro rises beyond the park and provides a memorable setting for the first sundowner.
An early departure gives the best chance of clear mountain views and soft photographic light. The guide follows wildlife activity rather than a fixed circuit, allowing time with elephants around the marshes and searching the drier areas for lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas. A picnic can be arranged inside the park, or guests may return to the lodge during the warmest part of the day. The afternoon drive continues around Observation Hill and the seasonal lake before returning to camp at sunset.
After breakfast, travel east toward Tsavo West. The scenery changes noticeably as lava fields, wooded hills and dense bush replace Amboseli’s open plains. Enter the park for a game drive en route to the lodge, pausing at viewpoints and wildlife areas along the way. Subject to road conditions and timing, visit Mzima Springs, where clear water from the Chyulu Hills supports hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. The afternoon is deliberately unhurried because wildlife in Tsavo often rewards patient observation.
Begin with a morning drive through Tsavo West before crossing into Tsavo East. The landscape opens into long horizons, dry riverbeds and red earth. Elephants frequently carry the colour of the soil on their skin, creating the red appearance associated with Tsavo. Follow the Galana River or other active water areas in search of elephant herds, lions, buffalo, giraffes and plains game. Arrive at the camp before dusk with time to settle in and listen to the evening sounds of the bush.
A final sunrise drive offers one more opportunity to find predators returning from the night and elephants moving toward water. After breakfast, leave the park and continue to Mombasa, Diani or the agreed coastal hotel. Arrival is normally during the afternoon, allowing guests to begin their beach stay the same day. Travellers flying onward can be transferred to Mombasa airport, subject to the confirmed flight time.
