Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park is a narrow stretch of forest tucked into steep, mountainous terrain, where deep valleys descend to the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The park is best known for its chimpanzees, made famous by the groundbreaking conservation research of Dr Jane Goodall. The best time to visit is from June to October (dry season), when chimpanzees are clearly visible, and the weather is perfect for trekking.

Gombe National Park is home to chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and over 200 bird species, including African grey parrots and hornbills.

Gombe is accessible by a 30-minute boat ride from Kigoma Town. The park is approximately 1.5 hours from Kigoma Airport, with flights available from Dar es Salaam International Airport.

There are limited accommodations available near Gombe, including basic lodges and campsites. Travellers can stay in Kigoma and take daily boat rides to the park.
