As you trek through dense forest trails, guided by local experts, you’ll experience the excitement of tracking these incredible creatures and witness their fascinating behaviours up close.
During your trek, the anticipation builds as you move deeper into the forest, listening for the sounds of chimps calling or rustling through the trees. The thrill of spotting a chimpanzee family, with their expressive faces and playful antics, is an experience that stays with you long after the journey. The guides, often from local communities, are not only experts in chimpanzee behaviour but also passionate about conservation efforts. They provide invaluable insights into the social structures, behaviours, and threats that these amazing creatures face, making the experience both educational and profoundly moving.

The pristine forests, the peaceful lakeside setting, and the opportunity to witness these intelligent, social animals in the wild offer a deeply enriching experience. Where It Happens
Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountain National Park is located in remote western Tanzania on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is regarded as the home to Africa’s largest wild chimpanzee populations.Â
Gombe Stream National Park
This is located in the North of Mahale and also alongside Lake Tanganyika. This is the famous site of Dr Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee research centre, which has been operating since the 1960s.
What the Experience is Like
Tracking usually begins early in the Morning, from 6 to 8 AM. You will soon meet our park guide and trackers from Migsam Safaris, who follow the chimps using calls, signs, and the chimps’ previous day’s locations.
The Trek
The hike will last for 30 minutes to 3 hours. It entirely depends on where the chimps are found. Trails wind through humid rainforest, steep hills, and rivers that are of moderate to challenging difficulty.
Once the chimps are found, you will surely spend up to 1 hour observing the chimps. You may see grooming, feeding, playing, or even dramatic social interactions. Chimps are habituated to humans, so you can get as close as 10 meters, though a respectful distance is enforced. You are advised to bring a zoom lens and a quiet camera. However, flash photography is prohibited.
