Experience the ultimate East African safari on this immersive 9-day journey combining Kenya’s Maasai Mara with Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Begin in Maasai Mara, enjoying three nights of private game drives across open plains, river landscapes and diverse wildlife habitats. Cross into Tanzania through the coordinated air-and-road border connection before continuing into the Serengeti, where two full days allow time to explore different sectors and follow current wildlife activity at an unhurried pace.

Conclude with a journey toward the Ngorongoro Highlands, followed by an early crater safari before continuing to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha, depending on the confirmed onward arrangements.

A remarkable cross-border safari connecting two of East Africa’s legendary wildlife destinations with the extraordinary Ngorongoro Crater.

A DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 01:

Arrival in Nairobi

Movement  Jomo Kenyatta Airport to city hotel depends on traffic

Meet the Kenya transfer representative and continue to the confirmed Nairobi hotel. Rest and review the following morning’s Wilson Airport flight. The package does not claim that an unspecified international arrival can be followed by a long Maasai Mara road transfer and afternoon safari.

The arrival day is deliberately kept light. After the airport formalities and luggage collection, the transfer team assists with the vehicle and the drive to the hotel. This gives you time to recover from the international journey instead of starting the safari tired.

At the hotel, the guide reviews tomorrow’s departure time, luggage arrangement, dietary requests and any optional activities already confirmed. The evening is free for dinner and rest, with no wildlife programme forced into the arrival schedule.

Before departure, the guide confirms the day’s movement time, meal plan and expected arrival window. Road estimates remain approximate because weather, park procedures, wildlife stops and traffic can change the pace. The confirmed accommodation is contacted if conditions require a later arrival.

Day 02:

Fly to Maasai Mara

Movement  Nairobi hotel to Wilson Airport transfer; flight about 1 hour

Transfer to Wilson Airport and fly to the Maasai Mara. Meet the Kenya guide at the airstrip and begin a game drive to camp. Continue exploring in the afternoon after lunch, focusing on the conservancy or reserve area attached to the confirmed accommodation.

The Maasai Mara day is shaped around the location of the confirmed camp or conservancy and the latest information from the guide. Open plains, river systems and quieter boundary areas can all be included, with the route selected for wildlife activity and sensible driving distance.

A picnic allows a longer circuit, while a return to camp provides a midday rest before the afternoon drive. Migration movement and river crossings are seasonal and unpredictable, so the day remains valuable through resident wildlife, patient observation and time in several habitats.

Day 03:

Maasai Mara full day

Movement  Flexible private game drives

Spend a complete day in the Mara with a private or confirmed exclusive-use vehicle. Follow wildlife activity across open plains and river areas, with a picnic or camp lunch. A community visit is included only through a responsible local arrangement and never treated as a brief staged stop.

Day 04:

Second full day in Maasai Mara

Movement  Flexible private game drives

Use the second full day to explore a different sector or stay longer with productive wildlife behaviour. During migration months, river activity remains unpredictable. The guide explains the ecosystem without guaranteeing a crossing.

Day 05:

Maasai Mara to Serengeti border connection

Movement  Mara to Migori flight about 45 minutes; border transfer and Tarime onward flight subject to schedule

Leave the Mara for the formal air-and-road border connection through Migori, Isebania and Tarime. Complete immigration before the onward flight into Serengeti. Meet the Tanzania guide at the destination airstrip and transfer to camp. All sectors are confirmed together before sale.

This is primarily a connection day, but it is arranged as one coordinated service. The Kenya team, border transfer and Tanzania team work from the same confirmed schedule so that luggage handling, immigration and the onward airstrip check-in follow in the correct order.

Passport control can take longer when the border is busy, and the flying programme may change with weather or operational conditions. The itinerary therefore protects a realistic margin and treats an afternoon game drive as welcome additional time rather than a guaranteed full safari session.

Day 06:

Serengeti full day

Movement  Flexible private game drives

Spend a full day in the Serengeti region selected for the season and incoming flight. The Tanzania guide uses current conditions to plan the circuit. Remain out with a picnic or return to camp during the warmer hours.

Central Serengeti supports wildlife throughout the year, so the guide works with the day’s conditions rather than relying only on migration movements. River valleys, kopjes and open plains are explored at a pace that leaves time to watch behaviour instead of moving immediately after each sighting.

An early start often provides cooler temperatures and softer light. Guests may carry a picnic for a wider circuit or return to camp during the warmer middle hours. The afternoon drive is adjusted after lunch, using fresh reports while avoiding unnecessary repetition.

Day 07:

Second Serengeti day

Movement  Flexible private game drives

Explore another Serengeti sector and compare its landscape and wildlife movement with the Maasai Mara. The day is kept free of long transfers so the cross-border package contains genuine safari time in both countries.

Day 08:

Serengeti to Ngorongoro highlands

Movement  About 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the Serengeti camp

Travel toward Ngorongoro by game-drive pace, stopping for lunch and wildlife. Reach the highlands before dark and prepare for the early crater descent.

Day 09:

Ngorongoro Crater and departure

Movement  Crater visit about 5 hours; onward drive to Kilimanjaro about 3.5 to 4 hours

Descend early for a focused crater safari and picnic lunch. Ascend by early afternoon and continue toward Kilimanjaro International Airport or an Arusha hotel. A late international departure or additional night is required; the website must not imply that any flight time will work.

The crater day begins early because descent roads, park traffic and wildlife movement are usually most favourable in the cooler morning. Once on the floor, the guide links the open grasslands, forest margins, wetlands and lake area according to current conditions instead of following a fixed loop.

A picnic lunch is taken only at an authorised site. The guide manages the available crater time carefully, allowing patient viewing while preserving enough time for the ascent and onward drive. Black rhino and other individual species are possible, but their presence can never be promised.

FAQs

What is the best time to go on a Tanzania safari?
Tanzania offers excellent safari experiences throughout the year, but the best time depends on what you want to see. The dry season is generally popular for wildlife viewing, while different periods offer unique experiences such as the wildebeest migration and calving season.
Yes. Migsam Safaris can tailor your journey around your preferred destinations, travel dates, accommodation style, activities, budget, and interests. Whether you are planning a luxury family safari, honeymoon, migration safari, or a private wildlife adventure, the itinerary can be customized.

This depends on your interests and the length of your trip. Popular destinations include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park. Your safari can be designed around wildlife, landscapes, the Great Migration, cultural experiences, or a combination of these.

Yes. Tanzania can be an excellent destination for a family safari. Migsam Safaris can recommend suitable lodges, routes, safari durations, and activities based on the children’s ages and your family’s preferences.

For peak travel periods, luxury camps, and popular migration seasons, booking several months in advance is recommended. However, Migsam Safaris can also help plan trips with shorter lead times, subject to accommodation and vehicle availability.
